Closing of The Bones/ Cerrada Ceremony

What is a Cerrada Ceremony?

The Cerrada ceremony (Closing of the Bones) is a ritual that is traditionally preformed 40 days of postpartum rest. It is a rite of passage ceremony originating in Mexico and the Americas that celebrates the transition into motherhood and back into the wider world, after the postpartum rest is complete. Spiritually, we call back the spirit of the mother into her body, and we witness and acknowledge the great transformation her body and psyche has just experienced. Physically, we use the rebozos to close the pelvis and joints of the body, which all widened and opened to grow and birth the baby. We cradle the new mama and wrap her in a cocoon of love and care, and she emerges as an embodied mother, steady in her seat of power.

This practice is supportive to the body & psyche no matter how long ago someone has given birth. It can also be a powerful way to close other experiences such as breakups, big life transitions, abortions and losses of any kind.

We hold the mother, so she can land gently into motherhood.
